Law Professor draws away in Excelsior Stakes
?q=100)
Law Professor came through as a heavy favorite when dominating six other older horses Saturday in the 111th running of the $125,000 Excelsior at Aqueduct in Ozone Park, N.Y.
Ridden by Manny Franco for red-hot Rob Atras, Law Professor returned $3 when finishing the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:50.34 over a sealed track rated muddy. After Franco deftly eased him out of a very early duel, Law Professor kept front-running Keystone Field in easy reach before taking over approaching the quarter pole and then drawing off to a 4 1/4-length score.
Keystone Field, the 7-1 second choice under Jose Lezcano, held second by another four lengths before Miles Ahead, the 7-2 second choice.
This was the fourth stakes victory, and sixth from 16 overall starts, for Law Professor, bred and owned by the Twin Creeks Racing of Randy and Kim Gullatt. The 5-year-old Constitution gelding now has earned $851,890.
The $2 exacta (2-5) paid $13.40, the $1 trifecta (2-5-4) returned $18.70, and the 10-cent superfecta (2-5-4-7) was worth $18.35.
