When he rallied from last to beat Trinniberg in the Gallant Bob Stakes at Parx in the fall of 2012, it looked like Well Spelled might develop into a significant player in the sprint division for 2013. An injury coming out of the Gallant Bob, however, limited Well Spelled to just one start in 2013. Monday, a healthier Well Spelled makes his second start of 2014 in the Grade 3, $250,000 General George Handicap at Laurel Park. Well Spelled, a 5-year-old son of Spellbinder trained by Ben Perkins Jr., was one of nine horses entered Friday for Monday’s General George, run at seven furlongs. The General George tops a 10-race card that includes the $100,000 Maryland Racing Media Stakes for fillies and mares. As a 3-year-old in 2012, Well Spelled won the Grade 3 Jersey Shore at Monmouth Park. After finishing third in a subsequent allowance, Well Spelled bounced back to upset the $300,000 Gallant Bob, beating the likes of Trinniberg and Private Zone in the final strides. Unfortunately, Well Spelled came out of the race with a front-leg injury that required surgery. The horse made it back to the races last July, when he finished fifth in the Teddy Drone Stakes at Monmouth, but came out of that race with an issue as well. It wasn’t until last fall that Well Spelled was “finally getting back to his old self,” Perkins said. Well Spelled returned in the Fire Plug Stakes at Laurel on Jan. 4, finishing fourth, two lengths behind Broad Rule. “He trained real well up to his first race back. The weather compromised him a little bit and he was probably only 80 percent [fit] when we ran him,” Perkins said. “We were really pleased with the race and that he came out of the race really well. If he can handle seven-eighths, I think he’ll run well.” Well Spelled has never run beyond six furlongs. Trevor McCarthy will ride Well Spelled, who gets in with a feathery 113 pounds. The New York-invader Palace is the starting highweight at 120 pounds. Last fall, Palace reeled off three consecutive victories, including the Grade 3 Fall Highweight in which he beat Grade 1 winners Strapping Groom and The Lumber Guy. His winning streak came to an end in the Gravesend, when he was beaten 6 1/2 lengths by Strapping Groom. Most recently, Palace was defeated by Moonlight Song in a stakes restricted to New York-breds. Cornelio Velasquez will ride Palace, who will concede four to eight pounds to the field. Javerre won last year’s General George at odds of 6-1 but hasn’t run since. His trainer, Cal Lynch, said the horse’s recent training is why he has elected to give him another try. Frankie Pennington rides. Bandbox, Broad Rule, Service for Ten, Smash and Grab, Tenango, and Warrioroftheroses also entered. ◗ Ilikecandy seems to have found a soft spot in which to make her stakes debut when she meets five opponents in the $100,000 Maryland Media Stakes at 1 1/8 miles. Ilikecandy, trained by Graham Motion, has 2 wins and 2 seconds in 4 career starts. She won twice at Laurel last fall before getting beat by Flores Island – who was winning her third straight race – in a second-level allowance at Aqueduct on Jan. 10. Celtic Katie, Malibu Red, C C Gold, Lunar Surge, and 14-time winner Tanivan also entered.
