Laurel Park: Jack's in the Deck tops Maryland Juvenile Championship

John McDulin|Dec 15, 2011
Jack's in the Deck
Barbara D. Livingston Jack's in the Deck will add blinkers for Saturday's Maryland Juvenile Championship at Laurel Park.

Maryland 2-year-olds take center stage Saturday at Laurel Park when a pair of $75,000 events highlight the nine-race card. The Maryland Juvenile Championships will be contested as the sixth and eighth races, with a division for fillies and a division for colts and geldings, respectively. Both events will be run at a one-turn 7 1/2 furlongs.

Jack’s in the Deck will be adding blinkers for trainer Robin Graham and slightly turning back in distance when he faces eight others in the colt and gelding division. Jack’s in the Deck is by far the leading money earner in the field, having amassed more than $197,000 in seven starts, three of them wins. Jack’s in the Deck won his maiden in the Grade 2 Futurity at Belmont Park on July 3. He then finished third in the Grade 2 Sanford at Saratoga on July 24. Jack’s in the Deck then won an optional claiming event at Delaware Park on Aug. 20.

In his only local start, Jack’s in the Deck finished fourth in the $100,000 Maryland Million Nursery on Oct. 1 as the 2-1 favorite. He won the $76,000 First State Dash at Delaware Park on Oct. 15 and most recently finished fifth in the one-mile, $75,000 Toccet at Aqueduct on Nov. 6.

Glib defeated Jack’s in the Deck in the Maryland Million Nursery, but has finished third in the Lord Henry on Nov. 6 at Aqueduct and second in the Dave’s Friend on Nov. 26 at Laurel in his last two starts, both for trainer John Robb. All three events were at six furlongs, and the stretch-out to 7 1/2 furlongs is the big question that Glib will have to answer. Mario Pino retains the mount.
