Laurel: Lyracist scores

Karen M. Johnson|Feb 18, 2002

Lyracist broke free from a losing streak that dated back to June, by winning Sunday's $76,500 John B. Campbell Handicap for older males at Laurel Park.

Lyracist, under Eclipse Award apprentice finalist Jeremy Rose, won the Campbell by 1 3/4 lengths over the favorite, Private Ryan. Top Official, who won the Campbell last year but was disqualified for interference, was a length back in third.

Lyracist, who came from off the pace with a wide move into the stretch to win the 1 1/8-mile Campbell, covered the distance in 1:50.10 over a fast track.

Lyracist ($34.30) is trained by Michael Petro and owned by Timothy Cunningham.
