Laurel cancels Sunday card due to freezing rain
Due to inclement weather, the Maryland Jockey Club has canceled Sunday's racing program at Laurel Park.
The National Weather Service had issued a Winter Weather Advisory and a Hazardous Weather Outlook until 10 a.m. Sunday for parts of Maryland, the District of Columbia, and portions of Virginia with forecasts for freezing rain and ice accumulations.
This is the second consecutive card canceled or postponed due to weather-related issues.
Saturday's Winter Sprintfest, featuring the Grade 3 Runhappy Barbara Fritchie Stakes and Grade 3 General George Stakes, has been transferred to next Saturday, Feb. 20. That card will not be redrawn with identical entries and post positions scheduled.
The Barbara Fritchie and General George Stakes are the first graded stakes of the year in Maryland and anchored a card that included the Nellie Morse Stakes for fillies and mares, the John B. Campbell Stakes for older dirt routers, the Wide Country Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, and the Miracle Wood Stakes for 3-year-olds at one mile.
Live racing is scheduled on Monday’s Presidents Day holiday.
