Laurel Park has canceled its card for Saturday, March 14, due to insufficient entries. All canceled races will be brought back as overnight extras on Sunday. Racing at Laurel Saturday was slated to coincide with the final day of the three-day spring meet at Colonial Downs, which will include the $500,000 Virginia Derby, $250,000 Virginia Oaks, and three more stakes. Small fields at Laurel were already an issue last weekend, as many races received six entries and were then severely impacted by scratches on wet tracks. The track had an average field size of 4.75 across eight races last Saturday. To avoid interfering with the same meet at Colonial last year, Laurel did not conduct racing from March 14-16. This week’s Friday card, featuring eight races, has already been drawn and racing is scheduled to continue on Sunday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
