Laurel: Bronze Abe prevails in Conniver

Joe DeVivo|Mar 08, 2004
Bronze Abe
Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club Bronze Abe wins the $75,000 Conniver Stakes at Laurel Park on Sunday.

Bronze Abe ($3.20) raced in tandem with Search for a Cure throughout much of the seven-furlong, $75,000 Conniver Stakes before she finally inched away to a half-length victory.

The scratches of morning-line favorite Gazillion and longshot Chiquilina had left only four starters in the race. The 5-year-old Bronze Abe has now won five stakes events, all in Maryland.

"It looks like there are a couple spots for her at Pimlico, and then we'll give her a couple months off this summer and get her ready for the Maryland Million this fall," trainer Bud Delp said. "That would be a perfect encore to win there before being retired."
