Late-running Split Time takes Alma North Stakes

Split Time was bothered at the break of the $75,000 Alma North when the horse to her inside, Elevenses, broke outward into her. That incident may have been a blessing in disguise as the pace in the seven-furlong race was hot and she was able to pick up the tiring leaders in the stretch and win by three-quarters of a length over fellow late-runner Norma's Charm.
Elevenses recovered after her eventful start and sprinted up to set the early pace inside Aggregator and Almond Roca. Before leaving the backstretch, they were joined from the outside by Limited View with the opening quarter going in 22.41 seconds and the half in 45.25.
Aggregator folded her tent on the far turn and Elevenses was done before hitting the quarter pole. Nearing the stretch, Almond Roca and Limited View were head to head, but Limited View began to bear out and came very wide into the stretch.
Split Time began to advance on the far turn and in upper stretch jockey Horacio Karamanos sent her into the large gap between Limited View and Almond Roca. She pulled away in the final furlong.
"We had a bad break," Karamanos said. "The No. 3 came out and crossed over in front of me. But once we got to the stretch, she gave me a nice kick."
Norma's Charm, a 45-1 longshot rallied wide to get up for second, 2 1/2 lengths ahead of Limited View. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back to Almond Roca.
The final time of the race for 3-year-old fillies was 1:24.48, following a six-furlong clocking of 1:10.90, meaning the final eighth went in 13.58.
Split Time, who is trained by Linda Rice, paid $8.40 as the second choice to 6-5 Elevenses. Split Time received a 66 Beyer Speed Figure.
A New York-bred daughter of Take Charge Indy owned by Tic Stables, Split Time was making her first start out of the statebred ranks. She is now 4 for 6. The Alma North was her second stakes win. She won the Maddie May two starts back at Aqueduct in March.
