Late Malibu Moon, Bernardini represented at sales
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The three months preceding the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sales saw the loss of prominent sires Malibu Moon and Bernardini, both sons of the great A.P. Indy. Each had a pair of yearlings for what will be their third-to-last crops change hands in Saratoga, with quiet results that will likely set the table for more demand this fall.
Spendthrift Farm’s foundation stallion Malibu Moon died May 18 in his paddock, of an apparent heart attack. The 24-year-old classic sire was represented by a colt sold for $290,000 to H. Allen Poindexter at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga selected yearling sale, and a New York-bred filly sold for $77,000 to Fast Horses/Golden Rock at that state-focused sale the following week. He had another colt who was a $95,000 buyback at the select sale.
Darley homebred Bernardini, a classic winner and champion, was euthanized July 30 at age 18, after a battle with laminitis. The stallion’s lone entrant in the Saratoga select sale was a filly who was a $95,000 buyback. He was represented by two New York-bred yearlings sold – a $90,000 filly to Crown Investments and a $77,000 colt to Jesse Hoppel.
