ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The late-developing Scat Girl drops into an appealing spot in a Thursday first-level allowance/optional claimer going 1 1/16 miles at Woodbine. Trained by Mike DePaulo for Zilli Racing Stables, Scat Girl graduated in her 14th start with a $40,000 claiming tag in a main turf sprint July 26. Three weeks later, the 3-year-old doubled up against nonwinners-of-two opponents going seven furlongs on the Tapeta. Scat Girl was 13-1 in a five-horse field in the Sept. 6 Wonder Where Stakes, the anchor leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara. She trailed along the inside through the far turn and then awaited room early in the stretch before closing for second behind Aristella, while leaving the top three favorites in her wake. “She ran a really good race,” DePaulo said. “She was coming up the fence and got delayed. The outrider couldn’t pull her up. That’s why we took a shot in the Breeders’.” Scat Girl saved ground most recently in the 1 1/2-mile Breeders’ Stakes and was never in the hunt while steadied along the way in the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. Runner-up Borealis Trail returned to win the Grade 3 Ontario Derby. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Scat Girl is being reunited with Leo Salles, who will break her from post 2 in the seven-horse field. Theft is returning from a 3 1/2-month layoff, which began after she ran second in a marginally easier allowance/optional claimer on July 12. The lightly raced 4-year-old earned her diploma in March at Turfway Park, and her only poor performance took place here on the inner turf June 1. Theft has worked weekly since early September and retains leading rider Rafael Hernandez, who has solid numbers for good layoff trainer Josie Carroll. Reveler’s Row finished fourth two starts ago on the Tapeta and is coming off a prominent third in her first turf start on the inner course for trainer Katerina Vassilieva. Eswan Flores takes over on the daughter of Mucho Macho Man, who checked in sixth in the July 20 Woodbine Oaks. Bound to Be True ended a long drought last time when beating nonwinners-of-two rivals going 7 1/2 furlongs on the inner turf. The daughter of Cairo Prince has never cracked 70 on the Beyer Speed Figure scale and is questionable going 1 1/16 miles on Tapeta. Logistics is rising in class off a $25,000 claim by trainer Marty Drexler following a flat fifth in a 6 1/2-furlong sprint that contained two next-out winners. She has won around two turns in the past and could be a speed threat on the stretch-out. Over the past five years Drexler is 3 for 12 going sprint to route off a claim, with a positive return on investment of $3.38. Rounding out the field in the third race are Why Em Sea Ay and Flying Black. Post time for the seven-race card is 5:30 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
