ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Last American Exit shed his reputation as a hanger by winning two of his first four starts at the Woodbine meet. He will try to clear the second allowance condition in Friday’s headliner, a seven-furlong race on the Tapeta, on a solid nine-race card that begins at 5 p.m. A stretch-runner trained by Robert Tiller, Last American Exit placed in four of seven races last year without finding the mark. He came out firing his best shot in his April 24 seasonal bow when beating non-winners of three rivals with an 84 Beyer Speed Figure. Last American Exit ran second in his first try against first-level allowance opposition on May 15. Two weeks later, he won that condition in a daylight victory over Souper Watson, who came right back to score. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! Last American Exit didn’t have the smoothest of trips most recently when ninth in the restricted Ontario Jockey Club Stakes. He was crowded shortly after the break and then altered course at the quarter pole before making up some ground to finish 3 1/4 lengths in arrears. Daisuke Fukumoto will ride Last American Exit, who was named by owner-breeder Frank DiGiulio Jr. after a song by Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. Fukumoto is 9 for 33 at the meet for Tiller. The 11-horse field also includes the Mark Casse trainees Soup and Sandwich and Swot Analysis. Soup and Sandwich is best known for finishing second in last year’s Grade 1 Florida Derby, after which he trailed a 19-horse field in the Kentucky Derby. The Live Oak homebred is winless since his second 2021 outing and has been freshened since finishing fourth in a May 15 conditioned allowance at Churchill that’s yet to yield a next-out winner. :: Bet the races with a $200 First Deposit Match and FREE Formulator PPs! His leading sire, Into Mischief, has produced 15 percent winners in synthetic sprints. The speedy Louisiana-bred Swot Analysis ran hot and cold over the winter at the Fair Grounds. When returning here June 11, he wound up second to longshot Told It All as the favorite in a conditioned allowance. Leading jockey Kazushi Kimura will ride him for the first time from the outside post. Tio Magico is making his first start since taking the restricted Queenston Stakes just over a year ago, after which he was injured while prepping for the Queen’s Plate. His trainer, Gail Cox, won at a 9 percent clip with horses returning from a layoff of at least six months during the past five years. Sandy Bay competes with a $50,000 tag in the optional claimer. He closed for second in his June 12 season opener on the grass in a $40,000 claimer, a race that’s no longer offered at Woodbine. The bulk of his success came on the Tapeta. Maclean’s Posse defeated Last American Exit in his May 15 comeback before ending up second in his first try at this level on June 26.
