Lassie winner Lexington Street returns at a mile

Jim Dunleavy|Nov 25, 2015

Lexington Street, the impressive winner of the Maryland Million Lassie on Oct. 17, is scheduled to run in a first-level optional-claiming race for 2-year-old fillies at Laurel Park on Friday.

Lexington Street, trained by Gary Capuano, made a bold move from fifth position on the far turn of the six-furlong Lassie to pull away and win by 5 3/4 lengths. The Lassie was her second consecutive win, and she is now 2 for 3 with earnings of $95,560.

Friday’s race is at a mile, which should not pose a problem for Lexington Street, who was bred in Maryland by owner Marathon Farms. She is a daughter of the Kentucky-based Street Sense.

Although the Maryland Million stakes have traditionally been for Maryland-sired horses, they have been opened up to Maryland-breds the past two years if a race doesn’t attract enough Maryland-sired entrants. This year, the Lassie was the only Maryland Million race that fell into that category.

The Friday card at Laurel also includes a second-level optional claimer at a mile and a 5 1/2-furlong, first-level turf sprint.
