Larkwood gets Lasix for second start

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – There’s only one non-claiming race on Friday’s Woodbine program, a seven-furlong maiden special on turf that contains some promising 2-year-olds, including Larkwood.

After breaking inward from post 1 in her Aug. 25 debut in a six-furlong maiden special, Larkwood closed belatedly from off fast fractions to finish third behind victorious Delamar, who returned to finish eighth after flashing speed in last Sunday’s Grade 1 Natalma Stakes.

Trainer Mike Keogh, who has solid numbers with maiden second-time starters, is putting Larkwood on Lasix for this race. His go-to rider, Jesse Campbell, will guide her again.

Larkwood will line up against 11 other fillies in the fifth race, which attracted 15 entries, including the three also-eligibles.

KEY CONTENDERS

Larkwood, by Langfuhr

Beyer: 55

◗ The Gustav Schickedanz homebred is a full sister to Woodsmoke, who won the Alywow Stakes on turf for Keogh.

Gosudarina, by Court Vision

Beyers: 43-27

◗ She’s been sidelined since her second race July 8, when she lacked room before closing for second to Mo Big Cat when going six furlongs.

◗ Gary Boulanger picks up the mount and is 6 for 29 at the meet for Hall of Fame trainer Robert Tiller.

Get Explicit, by Get Stormy

Beyers: 64-47

◗ After closing for fourth in her opener, she led most of the way before weakening to third in a seven-furlong maiden special on the main track Aug. 19.

◗ Her second-year sire, Get Stormy, was a multiple Grade 1 winner on the grass.

◗ After sending her out to work two quick half-miles this month, trainer Barb Minshall is taking the blinkers off her.

Maisie, by Stay Thirsty

Beyer: 61

◗ She was a stalking third in a five-furlong maiden special on the Tapeta when debuting Sept. 3.

◗ Her sire has produced 11 percent winners on the turf. Her dam, a turf winner, produced the turf stakes winner Lovely Bernadette.

Ghostly Win, by Ghostzapper

Beyer: 54

◗ An also-eligible, she was a commendable second as the favorite in her lone outing, which came in a six-furlong maiden special July 21. She prevailed in a four-way front-end battle before giving way to Split the Sea.

Yes It’s Dyna, by Yes It’s True

◗ An unraced daughter of a dirt sire, she’s a half-sister to five turf winners, including Dyna’s Mischief.

◗ Her owner-breeder, Ivan Dalos, won Monday’s Grade 2 Presque Isle Downs Masters with Ami’s Mesa.

Ultralight Beam, by Giant’s Causeway

Beyer: 49

◗ She showed little when sixth behind Larkwood on the grass in her opener, but the Sam-Son Farm runner should appreciate more distance.
