Lanerie stops by to win two races on Fountain of Youth Day

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Corey Lanerie, a 19-time leading rider at Churchill Downs, experienced moderate success in five winters of riding at Gulfstream, winning 184 races from the 2012-13 meet through 2016-17.
But after returning to Fair Grounds in his native Louisiana the last three winters, Lanerie had not ridden at Gulfstream since the Claiming Crown in December 2017 – until he came back Saturday with a splash.
Lanerie put on a couple of sensational rides on the Fountain of Youth undercard, winning an allowance race aboard Harvey Wallbanger and a maiden special with Mister Candy Ride. Both colts are trained by Kenny McPeek.

“I was supposed to come ride Hog Creek Hustle” in the Gulfstream Mile, said Lanerie, “but that didn’t work out. In the meantime, my agent [Cory Prewitt] hustled other mounts, and here I am.”
McPeek was unable to attend, having had a kidney stone surgically removed Feb. 26. He has been recovering at his Summerfield training center near Ocala, Fla.
“It was a great day for us,” he said. “I wish we could have been there.”
