Lakeville, 'Parfait' meet again

David M. Miller|Jul 12, 2002

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Three-year-old fillies and colts will contest separate divisions of the $35,000-added, 6 1/2-furlong MTA Stallion Auction Stakes at Canterbury Park on Sunday.

The Stallion Auction Stakes are reserved for progeny of stallions whose services were sold at the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association's Stallion Service auction in December 1997.

Demiparfait is the probable favorite in the filly division because of her win in the Frances Genter Stakes two weeks ago. In that race she edged Lakeville by a half-length after closing well between foes.

Trainer Todd Hoffrogge trains Demiparfait for Del Sand's Star Shine Stables. Tho Nguyen, her regular rider, will be aboard.

Lakeville also returns in Sunday's race. Her eventful trip in the Genter suggests she has a chance to turn the tables. In the Genter, Lakeville was making a strong move in upper stretch when she was forced to await room inside the tiring Susie Blues. Lakeville went on to take the lead but was collared late. Paul Nolan is Lakeville's regular rider, and he rides her again Sunday. She is a homebred filly campaigned by Camelia Casby and trained by Bruce Riecken.

Ashley's Affair and Our Luck Will Turn were eliminated at the start of the roughly run Genter and each has a chance to improve at a price in their division of the Stallion Auction Stakes.

Semi Sweet Dr may be fave

Twelve colts and geldings will contest that division of the Stallion Auction Stakes. Semi Sweet Dr may be the favorite following his runner-up finish in the Vic Myers Jr. Stakes two weeks ago. In that race Semi Sweet Dr made the early pace but could not hold off the heavily favored J. P. Jet, who will not contest the Stallion Auction Stakes.

Randy Schacht, Semi Sweet Dr's regular rider, will be aboard.

The biggest threat may come from Chicago shipper Aran Narayan. Aran Narayan won his first two starts of the year, facing Illinois-bred company, and draws leading rider Derek Bell in his first start at Canterbury Park.
