Lady War Machine wins Alywow Stakes in first turf start

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Lady War Machine won her stakes debut and first turf start comfortably by three lengths in Saturday’s $100,200 Alywow at Woodbine.
Lady War Machine ($6.10) moved up along the inside to duel for the lead with longshot Hard Street heading into the turn in the 6 ½-furlong sprint for 3-year-old fillies. Lady War Machine took control in midstretch, and then drew off in the final furlong to prevail in 1:15.40 over firm ground under Patrick Husbands.
“Looking at the paper, my horse looked like the speed, but on the turf . . . ” Husbands said. “I didn’t want to be on the lead, and I didn’t want to get trapped down on the inside. I kept my ground. She had her ears pricked. I just played it by ear. I was biding my time. The last quarter of a mile, I squeezed her, and she laid down and expanded.”
Honey Pants, the 9-5 favorite from New York, finished second. She was followed by La Libertee, Dirty Dangle, Can’t Buy Love, and Hard Street.
A daughter of Street Boss, Lady War Machine earned $60,000 for owner Mark Dodson and trainer Josie Carroll.
