Lady Dyanaformer coasted to a 4 1/4-length debut victory in June at Belterra Park. She steps up Friday in the $75,000 Cincinnatian Stakes on the turf against her fellow Ohio-accredited 3-year-old fillies, continuing the adventure for Thoroughbred aftercare advocate Kyle Rothfus, for whom she is the first homebred to race. Lady Dyanaformer is the least-experienced member of a relatively wide-open field of 11, which includes only two stakes winners. All are trying turf for the first time, and only a handful have raced beyond a mile. Rothfus and trainer Brian Waltz had long ago circled this restricted race for their filly, intending her debut as an experience-gaining tightener. Lady Dyanaformer has turf breeding, being by Vertiformer and out of a Shakespeare mare. “She’s got that nice, big, kind of turfy stride and build,” Rothfus added. Lady Dyanaformer is out of Lady Macjazz, who Rothfus acquired privately in 2014 as his return to horse ownership after a long hiatus. He targeted the Retired Racehorse Project’s Thoroughbred Makeover. An injury thwarted that plan, but Lady Macjazz went on to compete successfully in dressage, and Rothfus has contested the Makeover with other horses in the ensuing years. When Rothfus decided to breed Lady Macjazz, he investigated sporthorse sires – even going as far as to take the mare to a Hanoverian inspection for breeding approval – but eventually decided to breed her to a Thoroughbred with sporthorse build to give his prospect the option to race before going on to another career. Vertiformer, by the imposing Dynaformer, fit the bill. “My intention was to give myself the option to do both,” he said. “I considered breeding to a warmblood for a dressage prospect, and I thought, you know what, I would rather give myself the chance to tell the story of racing from a racehorse owner’s perspective than my aftercare perspective, and have fun with it.” Rothfus has similar long-term plans for Lady Dyanaformer, who will eventually move on to a sporthorse career and/or a broodmare career alongside her dam, who is currently in foal to Include for an Ohio-bred 2022 foal. Rothfus plans to acquire a farm in Kentucky to house his growing band, and to have the space for a sanctuary for broodmares and racemares. In the meantime, however, the Cincinnatian looms. Lady Dyanaformer set the pace in her debut under Rafael Mojica Jr., who remains in the irons Friday. She has drawn the outside post and will have to clear the field for a similar trip. The two stakes winners in the field are familiar foes Happy as You Go and Sammy’s Sister. Happy as You Go defeated Sammy’s Sister to win her maiden last year, then won both the Loyalty and Emerald Necklace stakes, defeating her rival in the latter. Sammy’s Sister eventually won her maiden, then got the last laugh for 2020, winning the Glacial Princess over Happy as You Go. Sammy’s Sister comes into this rematch off an allowance win in her second start of 2021. Happy as You Go was third in an allowance in her season debut. The field is rounded out by Boogie Boogee and Milwaukee Cat, both allowance winners at a mile for the longest wins in this field; fellow allowance winners Niceasakittenseyes and Rock Star Lady, the latter stakes-placed; maiden winners De Bolt Light and Songstopshelf; and maidens Gooseisontheloose and St Patty’s Song.
