Kumin named New Owner of the Year

Sol Kumin, co-owner of Grade 1-winning runners Lady Eli and Wavell Avenue, has been named New Owner of the Year by the industry-led OwnerView.

The award honors a Thoroughbred owner with less than three years in the business who has been successful in the sport and has had a positive impact on the industry. It will be presented at the Thoroughbred Owner Conference at Gulfstream Park later this month.

A resident of Boston, Kumin purchased his first Thoroughbred in 2014, and his first win came in March of that year. Not long after that, he purchased Lady Eli at auction, who went on to win the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Kumin been a key component in the formation of six racing partnerships: Beacon Hill Partners, Great Point Stables, Head of Plains Partners, Madaket Stables, Nantucket Thoroughbred Partners, and Sheep Pond.

He has an ownership interest in more than 65 racehorses, including the aforementioned Lady Eli and 2015 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint winner Wavell Avenue, as well as Slumber, Ray’s The Bar, Stallwalkin’ Dude, Sharla Rae, Gliding By, Undrafted, Last Waltz, and Dacita. Additionally, Kumin donated a portion of his runners’ 2015 Breeders’ Cup earnings to New Vocations.

“I am honored to be given this award for New Owner of the Year,” Kumin said. “I feel extremely lucky to have been introduced to horse racing at this stage in my life. In a short period of time, I have been fortunate enough to win some races and form some incredible friendships that I know I will have for many years to come.”

Kumin is the founder and CEO of Folger Hill Asset Management, an equity hedge fund that was launched in 2014. Prior to that, he spent 10 years SAC Capital Advisors, most recently as COO.
