Kristufek brings insight, enthusiasm to simulcast

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – He may be new to Kentucky racing fans, but this sure isn’t the first rodeo for Joe Kristufek, whose image and voice have become daily staples this spring at Churchill Downs by way of the simulcast signal.
Kristufek, 45, has been involved in racing as a writer, handicapper, and television personality since 1992, when he began working as a press-box aide at Hawthorne in his hometown of Chicago.
Kristufek essentially has replaced Jill Byrne, who was promoted to director of programming and senior racing analyst after having served as a simulcast host at Churchill since 2000, with some of her new duties involving the oversight of content on the Big Board video screen.
Kristufek brings an insightful and enthusiastic approach to his job as paddock host.
“I’m always trying to strike a delicate balance between the people in ‘simulcast land,’ who are hard-core players and already have their own opinions but appreciate a little extra food for thought, while also trying not to talk over the heads of people still trying to learn what the game’s all about,” said Kristufek. “You want to pick as many winners as you can, but you’re also trying to steer people in the direction of a horse that might have some wagering value.”
A die-hard fan of the Blackhawks, Bulls, and White Sox, Kristufek still maintains a home in Chicago and will return there during July and August to work at Arlington Park, where he is the longtime linemaker and is involved in fan education. Kristufek will be back in Louisville for the September and fall meets at Churchill.
“Everyone here at Churchill has welcomed me with open arms – my co-workers, the fans, the horsemen,” he said. “I feel like I belong.”
