Knick’s Honor became a stakes winner Saturday night, when he charged to a three-quarter-length victory over pacesetter Jackie Paper in the $50,000 Canterbury Park Derby.
It was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third to Mr in Personal.
The Canterbury Derby was one of four one-mile turf stakes on the annual Northern Stars Turf Festival card. Each was worth $50,000. There also was a $30,000 allowance named the Dark Star Turf Sprint, won by Finster ($8.40).
The turf was rated firm for the card.
In the Canterbury Derby, Knick’s Honor ($3.80) tracked Jackie Paper through fractions of 22.71 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.45 for the half-mile and 1:11.75 for six furlongs before going on to cover the distance in 1:36.18.
Eddie Gallardo was aboard for trainer Lynn Rarick.
The win in one of Canterbury’s signature races was a meaningful one for Rarick, who has a 17-horse stable on the grounds.
“I’m from Minnesota,” she said. “My first year here was way back in 1994 and I actually had the champion aged mare Quarter Horse for this area – way back when!”
Knick’s Honor, who won an allowance earlier in the meet, is now 3 for 13 for earnings of $84,930. He is a son of Knicks Go and races for the partnership of Ray Huelsman and Keith Anderson.
Brooks Fields Mile
Frosty View fought for a neck win over Tonka Warrior in the Brooks Fields Mile. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to Silent Runner.
Frosty View ($8) set fractions of 23.25 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.03 for the half-mile and 1:10.02 for six furlongs and had enough left to edge the late-running Tonka Warrior. The winner covered the distance in 1:34.95.
Luis Fuentes was aboard Frosty View for trainer Joel Berndt.
Frosty View was the horse of the meet last season at Canterbury. The son of Frosted races for Charlene Gabler. He was winning the third stakes race of his career and overall is 7 for 20 for earnings of $279,268.
Winner for Lady Shipman
Essential Lady ($5.60) became the second stakes winner for her dam, Lady Shipman, when she captured the Curtis Sampson Oaks by 2 3/4 lengths over Tamarack. Lady Shipman, an 11-time stakes winner who earned $902,387, also is the dam of Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Golden Pal.
Essential Lady was always prominent while covering the distance in 1:36.01. Emmanuel Esquivel was aboard for trainer Jonathan Thomas. Essential Lady is by Essential Quality and was bred by Randall Lowe and races for Ranlo Investments.
*** Wrigleyville ($5.20) pushed the pace set by Thunders Rocknroll and went on to a neck win over Salty Senorita in the Lady Canterbury. Keiber Coa was aboard for trainer Tom Proctor. Wrigleyville covered the distance in 1:34.66. She is a daughter of Into Mischief and races for her breeder, Glen Hill Farm.
