Klein, Cox try to recover in Edgewood
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – There’s really not much solace to be had in these cases, but Richard Klein and Brad Cox are hoping to salve their emotional wounds by pulling an upset in one of the graded stakes on the Kentucky Oaks undercard Friday.
Klein and his family bred and owned Cash Back, who had to be euthanized after breaking down Saturday morning at Churchill Downs when galloping out from a routine breeze. Cash Back, a 3-year-old filly by Congrats, was 4 for 4 in her career and was being pointed to the May 20 Miss Preakness at Pimlico. Her final triumph came in the Instant Racing Stakes on the April 16 Arkansas Derby program at Oaklawn Park.
“She was a special filly,” said Klein. “This was a really, really tough one.”
Klein and Cox plan to be represented Friday by Believe in Bertie in the Grade 3, $150,000 Edgewood Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf race in which Catch a Glimpse, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last fall, figures as a big favorite.
“I know Catch a Glimpse is in there, but I’m telling you, I think this filly is the real deal,” said Cox, whose $2.3 million in stable earnings are 10th in North America this year.
Believe in Bertie, a Klein homebred by Langfuhr, won her debut last summer at Saratoga before making her second career start in an April 10 turf allowance at Keeneland. The Louisiana-bred filly led every step but the last couple, being nailed on the wire by Heavenly View.
“She’ll move up off that race,” said Cox. “I don’t know if we can beat Catch a Glimpse, but I do know this filly has a lot of ability. It’d be great if we could get something done after what happened to us Saturday.”
