Kives goes for repeat

Adam Goss|Sep 13, 2002

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Owner Phil Kives, who won last year's $35,000 Buffalo Stakes with Rare Deputy, will have the favorites to win Sunday's renewal. Air Driver and Only You and I, who will run as separate betting interests, will carry the colors of Kives's K-5 Stable.

The one-mile Buffalo, restricted to Manitoba bred 2-year-olds, has attracted a field of nine.

Trained by Ramona Dorsch, Air Driver has won both her starts in wire-to-wire fashion, with her latest coming in the fillies division of the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Sales Stakes here Sept. 2. Air Driver has drawn the rail with Jerry Pruitt aboard.

Only You and I, an impressive gate-to-wire winner over maiden special weight company in her only start Aug. 10, will break from post 9 under Jacques DesAutels. Trained by Harry Kube, Only You and I is out of the mare Only Dreaming, who won the 1996 Buffalo.

New Release, who finished second to Air Driver in CTHS Sales Stakes last time out and was second to Only You and I in the start before that, will begin from post 7 with Juan Crawford in the irons. Trained by Chad Torevell, New Release is a half-sister to 1994 Buffalo winner Prairie Dream.

Bo Dippity, who won the restricted Frank Arnason Sire Stakes at first asking, finished a well-beaten fourth behind Air Driver and New Release in the CTHS Sales Stakes in her last start. Trained by Blair Miller, Bo Dippity breaks from post 3 with Navin Mangalee aboard.

Cabernet was able to sneak up the rail in colts and geldings division of the CTHS Sales Stakes to pull off a 36-1 upset in his last start. Trained by Patti Ross, Cabernet has drawn post 6 with Anderson Ward.

Bold Lover, Fancy Bru, and Hopetobeastar also exit the colts and geldings division of the CTHS Sales Stakes.

Bold Lover finished second after wide and troubled trip, and Hopetobeastar and Fancy Bru, who were part of a five-horse pace battle, finished third and fifth.

o Cathy's Star, a winner of two stakes here this year, heads a list of 11 fillies and mares nominated to $60,000 Matron Breeders' Cup Stakes. The 1 1/8-mile race will be run next Sunday.
