AUBURN, Wash. – Kiss My Lulu headlines an evenly matched field in Sunday’s $50,000 Angie C. Stakes at Emerald Downs. The meeting’s first stakes for 2-year-old fillies attracted five horses, and one could make a reasonable handicapping argument for any of the five. Kiss My Lulu is likely to start favored on the heels of a six-length maiden win in her only start. Kiss My Lulu covered 4 1/2 furlongs in a meet-best 51.25 seconds while coasting home under Javier Matias on June 27. Howard Belvoir said this week that Kiss My Lulu is one of the best fillies he’s had in a few years, and the veteran trainer has had some good ones. “After she ran, I worked her the other day behind horses, and she came through up the fence,” Belvoir said. “We spotted the other horse seven lengths, and she had her caught by the quarter pole.”Belvoir pointed out that Matias also rode Angie C. entrant My Heart Goes On in her debut win, but he chose to stick with Kiss My Lulu.“That must say something,” Belvoir said.It says plenty, though Kiss My Lulu will have to be at least as good in her second start – and probably a little bit better – to handle My Heart Goes On, a gate-to-wire maiden winner in her July 5 debut. My Heart Goes On earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 64 – the same number recorded by Kiss My Lulu in her maiden victory and identical to the 64 Beyer earned by a third entrant, Princess Kennedy, in her romping maiden score just 15 days ago. The other two Angie C. combatants, Pebble Beach and Jerre to Carrie, have ground to make up on Kiss My Lulu. Pebble Beach finished a distant second behind Kiss My Lulu in her career debut, displaying a quick turn of early foot from an outside post position. She should appreciate the longer distance in the six-furlong Angie C. Jerre to Carrie has started twice. She was third behind Kiss My Lulu and then second behind Princess Kennedy in a sharper effort. She’ll race with blinkers for the first time in the Angie C.KEY CONTENDERSKiss My Lulu (Beyer: 64)◗ By Proud Citizen and from an Unbridled’s Song mare, Kiss My Lulu demonstrated push-button acceleration in her maiden victory, running the first quarter in 22.31, the second quarter in 22.73, and the final sixteenth in 6.21.◗ Starting from the outside post in a small field, she should have unimpeded access to the front end whenever Matias is ready. My Heart Goes On (Beyer: 64)◗ My Heart Goes On has continued to train forwardly for David Martinez. She went five furlongs in 1:00.80 last Sunday, the fastest of 37 works at the distance. ◗ She’ll have a new rider, as Juan Gutierrez steps in for Matias. Princess Kennedy (Beyers: 64-41)◗ A horse on the way up, Princess Kennedy followed a fourth-place effort in her debut with a vastly improved effort in start No. 2, leading all the way to prevail by 2 1/2 lengths over stablemate Jerre to Carrie. She covered the final three-sixteenths in a crisp 18.14 seconds.
