King's preview: Meet in homestretch
The final three racing days of the week get under way Wednesday before concluding on Friday. Unlike Thursday and Friday, Wednesday lacks a stakes race, though there are three allowances on the eight-race card.
The first allowance is the fourth, a 5 1/2-furlong turf race in which Jamaican Smoke is likely to go favored. But not having raced on turf, and not having the flashiest of turf pedigrees, she isn’t a cinch, despite the excellent company she has kept over the years.
A potential upsetter at 5-1 on the morning line is Laser Cat, who is back on her game after having just won an allowance at Tampa by nearly five lengths when racing for a $40,000 tag in an optional claimer there. She is 3 for 5 on turf and has a versatile running style.
A full field of 3-year-old fillies race in the sixth race allowance, a race in which Christophe Clement holds a strong hand with two uncoupled entrants, Valseuse and Sea Queen – the two favorites on the morning line. Valseuse is slightly preferred, taking a class drop after a fourth in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride, a Grade 3 race in which the winner, Room Service, came back to finish in a dead heat for first in the Grade 1 Ashland.
The final allowance goes as the day’s nightcap in race 8, where there is a $15,918 carryover in the 50-cent Super High Five.
Value seekers should give a long look to Indian Starlight, a former claimer who just beat a nice starter group at Gulfstream. She owns quality Beyer Speed Figures and her trainer, Dave Kassen, is also known to dangerous with price horses.
