King's preview: Deep fields add intrigue
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – More standard racing fare is the order of the day Sunday at Churchill following a Saturday card on which four stakes were contested. The deepest races Sunday, both of which drew overflow fields, are the seventh and ninth.
Notable addition from the also-list in race seven
Take note that the also-eligible Red Neck Song (#13) has drawn into race 7 following the scratch of Don’t Even Blink. With nine of the 12 fillies in the race being first-time starters, Red Neck Song is one of the few to have raced, and she performed well in her lone start, rallying for fourth at Arlington Park following a slow start.
Of the debuting horses, Flor De La Luna (#6) and Arabian Queen (#1) appear to be two of the fastest, with the former rating on top due to trainer Bret Calhoun’s success with first-out juveniles.
As for the other two that have raced, Triple Trouble (#7) and Redlace and Pearls (#9), the latter is the more appealing prospect. She showed speed in her only race June 29 before fading to finish sixth of 11.
10 in the featured ninth
The ninth, a first-level allowance for fillies and mares at 1 1/16 miles on turf, surprisingly drew a deep cast despite offering a purse of $39,000 – well below the $100,000 allowance purses available a couple hours away at Kentucky Downs.
The presence of Naples Gold (#6) in the ninth makes sense given the affinity she has shown for the Churchill Downs grass course. Besides running a clear-cut second in a fast turf race June 29 at Churchill Downs in her last start, she also scored at first asking as a 3-year-old over the local course in November 2013.
Too Cool (#9) and Princess Mariah (#4) also rate as contenders.
Spot plays
Race 3: Queen of Scioto (#6, 8-5) won a starter over this track late in the spring meet and followed that up with a third at Ellis on turf, which isn't her favorite surface. Trainer Tim Glyshaw excels with starter horses and should have her ready to fire off a short layoff; a good single for multi-race exotics.
Race 6: Voodooville (#1, 7-2) comes off two straight wins but should still be a fair price because those wins came at Prairie Meadows. Owner Maggi Moss is winning at a 35-percent rate this year, and Corey Lanerie, the spring's leading rider, is up.
