The consistent filly War Painter, winner of the Victorian Queen Stakes last year, has proved a bargain. She has already earned more than four times her purchase price, and the only time she has missed the board in her career was against colts last year. On the surface, the filly’s pedigree is a tale of stamina crossed with speed. However, a deep dive into her sprinter dam’s pedigree reveals serious route class.

War Painter is from the second crop by Danish Dynaformer and is his first stakes winner. The stallion was predominantly a long-winded turf runner. Second in the 2015 Queen’s Plate, he went on to win the Breeders’ Stakes, the longest leg of the Canadian Triple Crown at 1 1/2 miles on turf. He later became a graded stakes winner at that distance in the Grade 3 Singspiel.

Morning Tale was a two-time winner, both in dirt sprints. Her other winner, Bricktop, also is a dirt sprinter. Morning Tale’s dam was unraced, and her second dam was Group 3-placed at a mile in England. That latter mare, Morning Devotion, produced European champion filly Balanchine, winner of the Epsom Oaks and the Irish Derby.

Among the Grade/Group 1-winning standouts in this extended family are Eclipse Award champion It’s in the Air; two-time Dubai World Cup winner Thunder Snow; fellow Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide; Irish Derby winner Sovereign; French Oaks winner West Wind; English 2000 Guineas winner Coroebus; French 1000 Guineas winner Musical Chimes; and the globe-trotting multiple Grade/Group 1 winners State of Rest and Storming Home.
