Kaukokaipuu
Colt by Mr Speaker – Grey Pride, by Mizzen Mast
Bred in Ontario by Sean Fitzhenry ($10,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling purchase by Tedston Holder)
The consistent Kaukokaipuu has already proven a bargain. With storied North American breeding programs on both sides of his pedigree, he won the Queenston Stakes in June before finishing second in the Grade 3 Marine Stakes, pushing his career earnings to $224,413, more than 22 times his $10,000 purchase price as a yearling.
Mr Speaker, by sire of sires Pulpit and from the deep Phipps family of unbeaten champion and blue hen Personal Ensign, was a multiple graded stakes winner, highlighted by the Grade 1 Belmont Derby. He has been versatile as a sire, with his top runners including Grade 1 Ashland Stakes winner Speech on dirt and Grade 1 Hollywood Derby winner Speaking Scout on turf.
Grey Pride was winless, but is the dam of two winners from three starters, both by Mr Speaker. She is a half-sister to stakes-placed Justleaveitalone and Flight Deck, the latter third in the 2018 Breeders’ Stakes, the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.
Grey Pride’s granddam is graded stakes winner Radiant Ring, a Sam-Son Farm homebred who launched a successful family for that storied operation. Her descendants include Canadian champions Catch the Ring and Catch the Thrill, significant stakes winner Seeking the Ring, and graded winner Southern Ring.
