Kalik
Colt by Collected – Coronation Street, by Street Cry
Bred in Ontario by Peter A. Berglar Racing Interests and Anderson Farms ($80,000 Fasig-Tipton November weanling purchase by Spin to Win Stables; $200,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by Whitehorse, Madaket, and e Five Racing)
The Canadian classic series tests 3-year-olds on multiple surfaces over a route of ground. Both sides of Kalik’s pedigree show versatility, as well as some route ability.
Kalik is from the first crop of Collected, in turn a son of City Zip. That late sire’s versatility was shown with runners such as Eclipse Award champion Improbable, a multiple Grade 1 winner routing on dirt; Canadian Horse of the Year Catch a Glimpse and Eclipse champion Dayatthespa, both top-level winners around two turns on turf; and Eclipse champion dirt sprinters Finest City and Work All Week.
Collected found his niche around two turns on dirt, with seven stakes wins highlighted by the Grade 1 Pacific Classic over Arrogate and a second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic to Gun Runner.
City Zip’s versatility is shining through early in his stud career. His best runners so far include Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan winner Taxed on dirt, Grade 2 Pennine Ridge winner Kalik on turf, fellow turf stakes winners Conclude and Freedom Trail, and stakes-winning juvenile dirt sprinter Tranche.
Unraced Coronation Street is the dam of three winners from four starters – Kalik and Chrome Run on turf, and Grade 3-placed Bringer of Rain on synthetic. Her immediate family has plenty of dirt accomplishments. Coronation Street is out of Sara Louise, a three-time graded stakes winner from six furlongs to a mile. She is the dam of stakes winner Spa City and Grade 2-placed Sara Street.
