ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Fillies have been like money in the bank in Canada’s most prestigious race, the King’s Plate. Woodbine Oaks winner No Time will try to become the second straight female King’s Plate winner while favored in the 166th running of the $1 million event for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds on Saturday. Trained by Mark Casse for owner Gary Barber, No Time earned a big 88 Beyer Speed Figure when taking the July 20 Woodbine Oaks over stablemates Shifty and Winterberry. That duo returned to fill out the exacta in the Bison City Stakes. No Time wasn’t far off a rapid pace in the 1 1/8-mile Oaks before going on to score by 3 3/4 lengths under John Velazquez, who also piloted her to victory in her maiden win. He was optimistic about the daughter of Not This Time’s chances when moving out to 1 1/4 miles over Tapeta in the King’s Plate, a distance that none of the 13 entrants has tried. “She galloped out very nicely,” said Velazquez, who will break her from post 10 in the King’s Plate. “I think if she can do that again – relax in the first part, the way she did [in the Oaks] – then she has a very good chance.” :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Casse also is sending out Ashley’s Archer, who came off a layoff to finish second in a July 13 allowance. “I don’t think you’ve seen his best yet,” said Casse, who has won the King’s Plate three times for Barber. Plate Trial Stakes runner-up Notorious Gangster figures to be the second betting choice under Fraser Aebly. He was delayed in traffic in the 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial before closing for second behind upstart Sedburys Ghost. The son of Classic Empire is trying to become the first horse to win the King’s Plate and the previous year’s 1 1/8-mile Coronation Futurity since Norcliffe in 1975-76. “He’s going to have to get a good trip because he’s a closer,” trainer Josie Carroll said. “The one thing that he shares with the horses that I have been successful with in the Plate is that he has a very good mind.” Sedburys Ghost got an 85 Beyer when winning his first stakes in the Plate Trial, which was run .23 of a second slower than No Time’s clocking of 1:50.37 in the Oaks on the same card. Both Jockey Ryan Munger and trainer Barbara Minshall are seeking their first King’s Plate triumph with the son of 2015 Queen’s Plate victor Shaman Ghost. “He’s in great order,” Munger said. “I’m so happy with how the horse is going. Barbara has done a great job with him. He’s doing everything you want a Plate horse to do.” Kevin Attard, trainer of King’s Plate winners Moira (2022) and Caitlinhergrtness (2024), sends out Grade 3 Marine winner Mansetti, Dewolf, and Faber. Mansetti took the 1 1/16-mile Marine over Scorching. “I thought all of them had good preps.” Attard said. “They’re all training well. I wouldn’t want to trade places with anybody. Faber is definitely suited for the distance. We’re putting blinkers on him to keep him a little more engaged early. The other two just need good trips. They have the talent.” Tom’s Magic, a two-time stakes winner on turf in the United States, is making his first synthetic-track start for trainer Mike Stidham. The son of elite sire Justify is a half-brother to Woodbine Oaks winner Dixie Moon and Plate Trial winner Guy Caballero. A Tom’s Magic triumph would put Rafael Hernandez in a tie for the winningest jockey in King’s Plate history with four scores, matching Sandy Hawley, Robin Platts, and Avelino Gomez. “I was supposed to ride him when he won at Monmouth Park, but I had to ride Caitlinhergrtness here,” Hernandez recalled. “I’ve talked to Mike Stidham a lot. We’re good friends. I’ve watched his races, and he’s been training on [Tapeta], so he already knows about the surface.” Scorching faded to third after prompting a quick pace in the Plate Trial. He got a late start to his season when second in the June 28 Marine after getting scratched from the Gotham on March 1 at Aqueduct by trainer John Charalambous due to illness. Runaway Again is trying to become the first horse in the modern history of the King’s Plate to prevail in his second career start. His July 13 debut was a good one. The 1 1/16-mile maiden special was moved from the turf to the Tapeta, and he won by 9 1/4 lengths with an 83 Beyer under Munger. Javier Castellano picks up the mount for trainer Sid Attard. Completing the field are Mythical Man, Watsonville Red, and William T. The King’s Plate goes as the ninth race at 5:34 p.m. on an outstanding card with five other stakes. The Kings and Queens Pick 3 is a new wager linking the three marquee stakes – the King Edward, E.P. Taylor, and King’s Plate. The $5 base bet has a 15 percent takeout. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
