Something new is on the wagering menu for Oaks and Derby Days at Churchill Downs: a two-day pick six that covers all the Grade 1 action. Friday’s races are the La Troienne and Kentucky Oaks, followed by the Humana Distaff, Churchill Downs, Old Forester, and Kentucky Derby on Saturday. The wager, with a $250,000-guaranteed pool, has a 15 percent takeout and mandatory payout, though the $2 minimum is unkind to budget-minded players, making spreading in contentious races rather expensive. I’ll take a stab with a small ticket, singling a couple of runners to keep the cost down. Up first is the La Troienne (Friday, race 8), a 1 1/16-mile contest for fillies and mares that features the return of Blue Prize (2), one of last year’s top older dirt mares. She won the Grade 1 Spinster in October before running fourth over the Churchill surface in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. She has an affinity for this surface and can win if fit for her first start in more than six months. A single. The Kentucky Oaks (Friday, race 11) is next, and I encourage using Street Band (12), Bellafina (4), and Champagne Anyone (10). Street Band, the Fair Grounds Oaks winner, starts for Larry Jones, a three-time Kentucky Oaks-winning trainer. Bellafina has been a standout in California this winter and spring. And Champagne Anyone acts like one of the best finishers in a lineup filled with speed. Turning to Derby Day, two horses stand out in the Humana Distaff (race 6): Spiced Perfection (2) and Marley’s Freedom (7). Both are Grade 1 winners over this seven-furlong distance, with the former winning both the La Brea and Madison and the latter taking the Ballerina last summer. The male counterpart to the Humana Distaff, the Churchill Downs (race 8) going seven-eighths, appears to be a sweet spot for Whitmore (12). A skilled late-running sprinter, he has caught a field with an abundance of pace, and his task is easier with archrival Limousine Liberal retired this week due to injury. Another single. The Old Forester (race 11) at 1 1/8 miles on turf is next, and I will use Synchrony (9), Bricks and Mortar (12), and Raging Bull (2). They are classy turf runners who have shown the ability to run this distance or beyond, and all are in good form. Synchrony and Bricks and Mortar were third and first in a slow-paced Muniz Memorial in late March at Fair Grounds, and Raging Bull was a respectable fourth when kicking off his year in last month’s Maker’s 46 Mile. The Kentucky Derby (race 12) naturally ends the sequence, and though contention is deep, to keep the price of this wager manageable at around $100, only a trio of horses land in the mix: Improbable (5), Game Winner (16), and Maximum Security (7). The latter two horses enter tarnished by recent losses but remain in good form, while Maximum Security is unbeaten in four starts and is blessed with speed. A $2 two-day pick six using the horses noted above – 2 with 4, 10, 12 with 2, 7 with 12 with 2, 9, 12 with 5, 7, 16 – costs $108.
