Although not reflected by his 1-for-5 record, he was gritty in defeat at Keeneland Oct. 14, missing second in a head-bobbing photo that could have gone either way. He ran quite well to lose by a length and a half in a first-level allowance that was quick for the level over a sloppy strip.
EL CUCUY
Trainer: Chris Hartman
Last race: Oct. 14, 9th
Finish: 7th by 9
Beyer: 58
Stretching out to a route for the first time, he ended up getting cooked in a speed duel with a couple rivals whose jockeys were similarly intent on the lead. He not surprisingly tired. Forgive this loss if he cuts back to a sprint.
SMILING CAUSEWAY
Trainer: Arnaud Delacour
Last race: Oct. 12, 9th
Finish: 8th by 4 1/4
Beyer: 84
Julien Leparoux rated her off the pace in a speed-laden field, tactics this headstrong filly seemed to resent. She fought him down the backstretch, made a bid to pull into second in midstretch, and then fell apart to tire to eighth. Likely capable of better if allowed to run freely.
PRINCESA CAROLINA
Trainer: Ken McPeek
Last race: Oct. 10, 7th
Finish: 5th by 4
Beyer: 69
Facing stakes horses for the first time in the Jessamine, she was hard held in traffic at the back of the pack before being cut loose on the second turn. She made a quality run, but lost ground and was steadied a couple of times in traffic, which likely cost her a top-three placing.
