King: How I'll play Keeneland on Sunday, Oct. 8
Heavy rain overnight has resulted in a wet main track and the scheduled turf races, besides the Grade 3 Bourbon, being taken off the grass. Some early scratches are in, but horseplayers are advised to keep tabs for more as the day progresses.
My two favorite races today are the sixth, an optional claimer for sprinters, and the ninth, the Spinster – contests in which both of my top selections are winners over muddy or sloppy tracks.
Starting with the sixth, I plan to back Rocket Time (2), who looks poised to return to form with a return to dirt, his preferred surface. And though his recent experience has come in longer races, if you dig deep within his past performances in DRF Formulator, players will see that he has a win and a third in two starts at this approximate seven-furlong distance, both at Keeneland. One was an allowance victory, while the other was a third-place finish in the Grade 3 Commonwealth.
I’ll play him to win and use him on top of Rated R Superstar (5) and Grand Candy (1) in exactas.
As for the Spinster, it is a contentious race, but I see move-up potential from Tiger Moth (5), who ran well to hit the board for the first time at Churchill last month in the Locust Grove over a surface where she had previously struggled. The promising news is she was a close second in a prior start at Keeneland and won in the mud at Oaklawn earlier this year.
With her offering value at 5-1 on the line, she warrants a win play and exacta boxes with Lockdown (6), Martini Glass (1) and Bar of Gold (8).
