King: How I'd play Belmont on Sunday, July 12
Three horses catch my interest Sunday at Belmont Park, with two coming midway through the card and the other in the nightcap.
The first of the my plays – provided these horses don’t drop much from their morning lines – is RUMBLE DOLL (#1A, 5-1) in the fifth. He is a consistent performer on turf and owns competitive Beyer Speed Figures but won’t be a short price due to his relatively low-profile barn.
He also makes his second start off a layoff and has every right to move forward off a runner-up finish against similar June 7.
A first-time starter in race six also is appealing: PROSPECTOR'S MOON ((#5, 5-1). She sold well at auction, getting hammered for $350,000, and is by a top sire in Malibu Moon. Her dam has dropped a couple top-notch runners, and this one's works suggest she has talent.
Beyond that, there are a couple experienced runners in the field that figure to take money, but they aren’t standouts.
In the 10th and final race, DOMINIC'S SMILE (#8, 3-1) looks like a potential overlay as the likely second choice in the race. He might even drift up from his morning line.
He just ran a 74 Beyer Speed Figure but might be overlooked a bit since that race was a victory by way of disqualification. Sometimes the public views such wins as phony as he needed help from the stewards to win, but regardless, he ran quickly.
