King: Churchill Downs horses to watch for week of Nov. 21
RED CLAY MAGIC
Trainer: Steve Hobby
Last race: Nov. 17, 4th
Finish: 2nd by 3
Beyer: 67
Dueled with a pair of rivals through an insane opening quarter-mile in 21.06 seconds, and after putting away the other front-runners proved no match for the winner while well clear of the rest of the field.
LET’S GO DONNA
Trainer: Troy Wismer
Last race: Nov. 17, 10th
Finish: 3rd by 4 1/2
Beyer: 50
Held well to last for third after dueling for the lead in a $5,000 claimer on the dirt, even though that is not her preferred surface. She is at her best on synthetic, and has move-up potential if she races next on the Polytrack at Turfway.
STORY ONTHE STREET
Trainer: Chris Richard
Last race: Nov. 20, 2nd
Finish: 2nd by 1 3/4
Beyer: 51
Outperformed the betting public’s expectations in rallying to be second against $8,000 nonwinners-of-two claimers and was interestingly claimed out of the race by trainer Chris Richard, whose first-after-claim runners often take notable jumps forward.
FIRE FOR EFFECT
Trainer: Dale Romans
Last race: Nov. 20, 8th
Finish: 5th by 8 3/4
Beyer: 57
Making his debut, he was impeded at the start when another rival ducked out, and then rallied wide to be fifth, checking in just a nose away from fourth. Should improve second out with a clean trip.
