Killybegs Captain sidelined with ankle injury

ELMONT, N.Y. – The graded stakes winner Killybegs Captain will be out of training indefinitely due to an ankle injury, trainer John Terranova said.
A 6-year-old son of Mizzen Mast, Killybegs Captain will be off through the summer, and Terranova said it remains to be seen if the horse returns to racing later this year or if potentially a stallion deal could be made.
“If we can bring him back for the fall, possibly, if not we’ll have our options on the table in front of us,” said Terranova who trains Killybegs Captain for Curragh Stables. “I would never want to see him not come back to the level he was just reaching. He was the best he’s ever been, just unfortunate we got sidetracked. I thought he had a couple of big performances coming up.”
Killybegs Captain, who won the Grade 3 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash last fall at Laurel, was sent to Dubai for the Golden Shaheen at Meydan in March. But that race was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

He was being pointed to last Saturday’s Grade 1 Carter before injuring his ankle in his final workout.
On the flip side, Terranova did win a race last Saturday with the first-time starter Life Changer, a 3-year-old son of Oxbow, who won a six-furlong race by a neck. Terranova said he is looking forward to stretching him out in distance.
“We’ve been quietly confident about him for a while,” Terranova said. “Didn’t know about sprinting him first time out. He’s just got a lot of great qualities about him.”
