Killin Me Smalls much the best in Spangled Jimmy
Heavily favored Killin Me Smalls paid $3 for his romp over 50-1 longshot Aces Again in the $50,000 Spangled Jimmy at Northlands Park on Saturday.
With Ruben Lara aboard, Killin Me Smalls sat off Bear's Reality before taking complete control of the race at the quarter pole. He started to widen on the field on the stretch turn, took a commanding lead into the stretch, and drew off to win by 9 1/4 lengths. Aces Again rallied late to edge second choice For Cash for second by a head.
The final time for the one-mile race for 3-year-olds and up was 1:36.57.
It was the third straight win at the meet for Killin Me Smalls, who is trained by Ernie Keller.
Another heavy favorite, Rock and Glory, dominated her opposition in the $51,950 John Patrick for fillies and mares Friday evening. She paid $2.90 for her 8 3/4-length win over Holiday Babe in the one-mile race for fillies and mares.
Ridden by Rico Walcott, Rock and Glory set quick fractions and was never threatened while posting a final time of 1:39.22.
