Killin Me Smalls cruises in Speed to Spare
Killin Me Smalls cruised to a five-length win over Wild Legend in the $75,000 Speed to Spare at Northlands Park on Monday. He paid $7.40 as the second choice in the 1 3/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and up.
With Ruben Lara aboard, Killin Me Smalls broke on top and controlled the race throughout. He held a one-length lead after six furlongs in 1:15.32, opened up a five-length advantage at the one-mile marker, and was never threatened the rest of the way.
Wild Legend rallied from last to finish second. The 4-5 favorite, For Cash, stalked the pace but couldn’t keep up and finished another 9 1/4 lengths back in third.
The final time was 2:21.53.
It was the third stakes win at the meet for the Ontario-bred 5-year-old, who is trained by Ernie Keller. Killin Me Smalls is owned by Deltin Stable and Ed Welsh.
