Kid Tristan takes Fair Grounds

Marty McGee|Feb 03, 2002

NEW ORLEANS - Kid Tristan moved with a rush entering the stretch and went on to an easy 6 1/2-length victory Sunday in the $80,000 Fair Grounds Sales Stakes*.

Ridden by Jamie Theriot, Kid Tristan was winning for the second time in six career starts. He returned $8.80 to win as third choice in a field of six 3-year-olds, finishing one mile in 1:39.94 over a fast track. The winner is a Clever Trick colt owned by a group headed by Ralph Wadleigh and trained by Ray Frederick.

"He showed his talent today," said Frederick. Toi Fund finished second, another 6 1/2 lengths ahead of Chaseafallenstar. Gildmore, the even-money favorite, tired abruptly on the turn and was eased in upper stretch.

The race was restricted to horses entered in the Fair Grounds Sales Co.'s annual 2-year-olds-in-training sale last March.
