Kick On earns shot at Delta Jackpot

Mary Rampellini|Nov 08, 2008

Kick On is now being pointed to the Grade 3, $750,000 Delta Jackpot for 2-year-olds next month at Delta Downs after he picked up his fourth straight win Friday night in the track's local prep for the race, the $150,000 Jean Lafitte.

"I've got to go back after winning that one," said Joe Petalino, who trains Kick On for Baccari Racing.

Kick On ($3.60) settled in third early in the one-mile Jean Lafitte, as Texas Birdstone, with He's Boy Wonder in close pursuit, set early fractions of 23.73 seconds for the opening quarter and 49.05 for the half-mile. Kick On advanced on the turn, overtook He's Boy Wonder in the stretch, and finished full of run. Kick On covered the mile on a track rated fast in 1:41.21.

He's Boy Wonder finished three-quarters of a length back in second, while it was another 3 3/4 lengths back to I Come From Behind.

Ken Tohill was aboard Kick On, who came into the Jean Lafitte off a six-length win in the $125,000 MEC Mile at Remington Park. The horse, who is a son of Wiseman's Ferry, has now won 4 of 7 starts and $210,536. The Delta Jackpot will be run on Dec. 5.

Southern Yankee extends win streakSouthern Yankee ($34.80) collected her third straight victory by taking the $100,000 My Trusty Cat for 2-year-old fillies. The race served as the local prep for the Grade 3, $500,000 Delta Princess on Dec. 5.

Southern Yankee sat just off the pace set by Seacrettina, waited behind horses on the final turn, swung outside at the top of the stretch, and finished with authority. Southern Yankee won by 2 1/4 lengths over Smokin Again. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Seven Seventythree.

Carlos Lozado rode Southern Yankee, who covered the seven furlongs in 1:27.53. Olivo Inirio trains the filly for Rolando Cabral.

Handle on the 10-race card was $1,187,213.
