Plum Pretty, winner of the 2011 Kentucky Oaks, has died at age 16, Gainesway Farm reported in a press release on Monday. A cause of death was not given for the daughter of Medaglia d’Oro, who was boarded at Gainesway for owner Mandy Pope. "She was a pleasure to be around and always a great mom," Pope said in the release. "We are blessed to have several fillies out of her still to race and one that has already produced a foal. The colts have gone on to secondary careers in the show world and have her awesome personality." Pennsylvania-bred Plum Pretty raced throughout her career for John Fort’s Peachtree Stables, which purchased her as a 2-year-old, and was trained by Bob Baffert. She compiled a career record of 12-5-2-3 and earned more than $1.6 million. Plum Pretty was Grade 1-placed early in her 3-year-old campaign, but put her name forward as a Kentucky Oaks contender with a front-running, 25-length victory in the Sunland Park Oaks in March 2011. Sent away as the fourth choice at Churchill Downs, she quickly recovered from an awkward start to stalk the pace in second, assumed command and drew clear in the stretch, and then held off a charging St. John’s River for a neck victory. Plum Pretty won the Grade 2 Cotillion later that year, and added the Grade 1 Apple Blossom in early 2012. She ultimately retired with her four stakes wins and another five graded stakes placings. Plum Pretty was offered as a broodmare prospect at the 2012 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, and was purchased for $4.2 million by Pope, who was in the process of making major investments to build up her Whisper Hill Farm broodmare band. The mare produced eight foals, and from four starters to date, she has one winner, the War Front filly Pretty At War. Her statistics could still change. Plum Pretty’s final three foals are Plum Perfect, an unraced 3-year-old filly by American Pharoah; an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Speightstown; and a newly turned yearling filly from the first crop of Charlatan.   :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
