LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The undefeated Kathleen O., the potential favorite for next Friday’s $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks, had her first workout over the Churchill Downs main track Saturday morning, breezing a half-mile in 48.05 seconds, though she never did get by her workmate, the 3-year-old colt Smokin' T. Kathleen O. was one of six prospective Oaks candidates – but certainly the most high profile one – to put in a work Saturday morning, six days out from the race that figures to draw a full field of 14. Saturday, under exercise rider David Jego, Kathleen O. started about three-quarters of a length off of Smokin' T, who was being ridden by jockey Declan Cannon and who is pointing to Friday’s American Turf Stakes. Around the turn, Kathleen O. dropped a little further back and was still behind the workmate after a quarter-mile in 24.47. Jego was asking Kathleen O. some through the lane, but was still a neck back at the wire and on the gallop-out, which was completed in 1:00.40 for five furlongs. Kathleen O. has typically worked by herself. McGaughey said he wanted her to have company Saturday because “I wanted to give her a little something to do today,” he said. “Just have something to look at. If she works by herself, you got to ask her a little bit more.” Overall, McGaughey felt Saturday’s move was “a very good work for her.” He believes Kathleen O. prefers a firmer type of dirt surface and said “as the week goes on, it’s going to get firmer and firmer, but I think she’s done very well since we’ve been here.” :: DRF has you covered! Kathleen O., a daughter of Upstart owned by Patrick Kearney, is 4 for 4 and is coming off Grade 2 stakes wins in the Davona Dale and Gulfstream Park Oaks in her two most recent starts. Gazelle stakes winner Nostalgic worked a half-mile in 48.95 in her second breeze over the Churchill Downs main track. Her workmate, the 3-year-old maiden-winning colt Mendenhall, dumped his exercise rider Guelser Cardona and got loose shortly after the two horses came onto the racetrack. Mendenhall was apprehended quickly and returned to the track for the work. Nostalgic, under exercise rider Penny Gardner, started slightly ahead of Mendenhall and was asked some by Gardner to remain in front through a final quarter of 24.07. “She went well and galloped out good,” trainer Bill Mott said. “I couldn’t be happier.” Oaks longshots Candy Raid and Cocktail Moments each worked a half-mile Saturday at Churchill. Candy Raid, upset winner of the Bourbonette Oaks, went a half-mile by herself in 48.88 under exercise rider Alex Cano. “She moves well over the track, the time was satisfactory, she galloped out well, my rider said she likes the surface,” trainer Keith Desormeaux said. Cocktail Moments, beaten 8 1/4 lengths by Nest when second in the Grade 1 Ashland, worked a half-mile in 48.53 in company with the 3-year-old filly Park On the Nile. “She worked super,” trainer Kenny McPeek said. “I get it, she’ll be one of the longer prices, but the filly’s doing well, she’s run well at Churchill, I’d give her an outside chance.” :: Get Derby Clocker Reports from Mike Welsch and the DRF Clocker Team to access exclusive insights from the morning workouts In Southern California on Saturday, Santa Anita Oaks winner Desert Dawn worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 over Santa Anita’s main track. “Her last two breezes have been very good, with a nice steady gallop-out as well, full of energy,” trainer Phil D’Amato said. “She should be ready to go.” D’Amato said Desert Dawn would ship Sunday with three other horses he has to run in stakes here, including Ain’t Easy, the third-place finisher in the Santa Anita Oaks who will run in the Eight Belles on Friday’s card. At Keeneland, Fantasy Stakes winner Yuugiri worked a half-mile in 49.20 in company with the 3-year-old colt Barossa.  In one other Oaks development, trainer Brad Cox said Manny Franco would ride Turnerloose in the race. Florent Geroux had been her regular rider, but he is committed to ride Yuugiri in the Oaks.
