LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Kentucky Oaks field that has morphed a good deal since entry day last Saturday took another twist on Thursday morning when Bella Ballerina was declared out with a minor injury, trainer Brendan Walsh said. The scratch allows all of the original also-eligibles to make the starting gate.  Walsh described Bella Ballerina's leg injury as just a "ding," and indicated the filly would not be out of action too long. Bella Ballerina trained Wednesday morning, but did not train Thursday morning.  The last to draw in to the Oaks is Resist, whose trainer, Tom Drury Jr., said Thursday morning she will run in the Oaks.  "You certainly don't wish anything bad on anybody else, but we kind of treated her all week as if she was running, and figured we'd play the waiting game, and it worked out for us," Drury said. "Obviously, sorry for the ones that it didn't work out for, because I've certaintly felt that as well."  :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Resist has made all four of her career starts at Turfway Park. She was third in both the Cincinnati Trophy and Bourbonette Oaks on Tapeta.  "She's been going the right way," Drury said.  Last Saturday when entries were taken for the Kentucky Oaks, Paradise and Lorelei Lee, both of whom would have been in the main body of the field based on their respective positions on the Oaks leaderboard, opted for different races on Friday's card. Paradise will go back to one turn in the Grade 2 Eight Belles, while Lorelei Lee will move from Tapeta to turf for the Grade 2 Edgewood Stakes.  Still, an overflow group of 17 fillies was dropped in the entry box. A maximum of 14 are permitted to start, and the designated also-eligibles based on their points earned throughout prep season, in preference order, were Lovely Grey, Nycon, and Resist.  Lovely Grey, most recently second in the Bourbonette Oaks, didn't have to wait long. On Sunday, Bottle of Rouge coughed following her final breeze and was declared out, allowing Lovely Grey into the field. On Wednesday, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. said his entrant My Miss Mo was "not at the level she needs to be for the Oaks this week" and withdrew her, allowing Nycon into the race. Thursday’s developments emptied the also-eligible list. "It seems like there's always a lot of changes from the time they draw to the time they run," Nycon's trainer Whit Beckman said. His filly is multiple stakes-placed and most recently was fourth in the Grade 2 Gazelle.  :: Get DRF Kentucky Oaks & Derby Betting Strategies by Marcus Hersh and David Aragona. Full analysis and wager recommendations! With the starting gate full for the Oaks, all the fillies who were outside of the scratched horses move in one slot to fill the gaps, and Lovely Grey, Nycon, and Resist will break from posts 12, 13, and 14, respectively. Beckman, for one, isn't worried about being toward the outside of the gate.  "I actually like it a little better for her," he said. "I don't want her . . . kind of getting goosed along. Hopefully that outside will kind of let her settle a little bit earlier."  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
