A full gate of 12 looks like a good possibility when the Grade 3, $500,000 Vinery Racing Spiral Stakes is run next Saturday, March 26, at Turfway Park.
Monzon, the 3-year-old who won the Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct on New Year’s Day, is being pointed to the $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland on April 16, trainer Ignacio Correas IV said Friday.
Premier Pegasus leaped into the top 20 of Derby Watch this week with his resounding victory in the San Felipe at Santa Anita. He was so impressive that Mike Watchmaker, Daily Racing Form’s national handicapper, made him the fifth choice, at 12-1, on his Kentucky Derby future line.
On Saturday, the aptly named Sway Away tries two turns for the first time in the Grade 2, $300,000 Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park. His swayback apparently hasn’t interfered with his performances. In three starts, Sway Away owns a win and two second-place finishes, including a runner-up effort last time out in the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita.
If The Factor shows the same brilliance routing that he has sprinting in the Grade 2, $300,000 Rebel at Oaklawn, he’ll emerge as one of the flashiest prospects on the road to the Kentucky Derby. If he fails to carry his speed, he could be exiting the Louisville-bound freeway Saturday.
Blind Luck, The Factor and Sway Away all rolled through the Oaklawn Park backstretch around 5:15 p.m. Central on Wednesday, in town for stakes races on Saturday. The horses flew in from Southern California along with Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger, who is being pointed for the Grade 3, $200,000 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn on April 14.
