Florida Derby adds Flashpoint to the mix

The 2011 Florida Derby, already the deepest of all the Kentucky Derby preps, got even stronger on Thursday after trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. and owner John Fort decided to add the undefeated speedster Flashpoint to the mix. The 1 1/8-mile Florida Derby is the only graded stakes race for 3-year-olds this weekend. It is back at a position that has proved popular for the race in recent years, five weeks out from the May 7 Kentucky Derby.

2011 Kentucky Derby: Who's hot, who's not for March 31

J P's Gusto puts in bullet work with blinkers added; Arkansas Derby next

J P’s Gusto donned blinkers for a Thursday workout at Oaklawn Park and after he breezed five furlongs in a bullet 58.60 seconds his trainer, Joe Petalino, said he would add the equipment for his next start. Petalino said the horse is possible for the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby on April 16.

Data Link a candidate for Blue Grass, but not Kentucky Derby

Santa Anita Derby looking crowded

With or without Jaycito, the $1 million Santa Anita Derby on April 9 is likely to have a large field. As of Wednesday, there were 11 probable starters for the West Coast’s leading prep for the Kentucky Derby, a list that tentatively includes Jaycito, the winner of the Grade 1 Norfolk last year and the runner-up in the Grade 2 San Felipe on March 12.
