Kentucky Derby: Watch Me Go allays O'Connell's fears about wet track

Watch Me Go struggled to a sixth-place finish in the Illinois Derby over a racetrack officially listed as fast but which had plenty of moisture in it. So trainer Kathleen O'Connell was reluctant to allow her horse to work out over a rain-soaked track at Churchill Downs. O’Connell finally had to give in to the elements and work Watch Me Go five furlongs over a sloppy racetrack in 1:02 here early Monday morning. Watch Me Go appeared to handle the strip nicely while galloping out with high energy under jockey Freddie Lenclud.

Shirreffs says no to Kentucky Derby, maybe to Preakness for Mr. Commons

Mr. Commons, third in the Santa Anita Derby last month, will not be sent to Churchill Downs for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby because he is not certain to gain a starting berth, trainer John Shirreffs said on Sunday.With no guarantee of starting, Shirreffs is opting to keep Mr. Commons in California, but said a trip to Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes on May 21 is a possibility.
