Out West, the scratches of Jaycito and Premier Pegasus left the Santa Anita Derby ripe for an upset, and maiden winner Midnight Interlude stepped in to give trainer Bob Baffert his third Kentucky Derby contender. At Hawthorne, the unheralded Todd Pletcher traineee Joe Vann turned in a solid performance in the Illinois Derby.
