Kentucky Derby runner-up Renegade sidelined, will return in 2027

Renegade, the Kentucky Derby runner-up and multiple graded stakes-winning 3-year-old, is currently sidelined with mild bone bruising, but he is slated to return to racing as a 4-year-old in 2027, trainer Todd Pletcher said Tuesday.

“I don’t think it’s significant. We’re hoping [out of training] in the neighborhood of 60 days and go back into training with a 4-year-old campaign in mind,” Pletcher said. “Obviously, that’s going to exclude anything happening in Saudi and Dubai, but we’re hoping to have a relatively full campaign.”

Renegade, a son of Into Mischief owned by Mike Repole and Robert and Lawana Low, went 3 for 6 in 2026 with victories in the Sam F. Davis, Grade 1 Arkansas Derby, and Grade 2 Jim Dandy.

Renegade fell a neck shy of Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby and was third to that horse in the Belmont Stakes. After rebounding with a victory in the Jim Dandy on Aug. 1, Renegade finished eighth of 10 as the second choice in the Grade 1 Travers on Aug. 29.

At 2, Renegade was officially winless in three starts, though he was disqualified for interference from an apparent maiden win last October over Paladin.
