Kentucky Derby pedigree profile: Tiz the Law
Tiz the Law
Constitution – Tizfiz, by Tiznow
Bred in New York by Twin Creeks Farm ($110,000 Fasig-Tipton New York-bred yearling purchase by Jack Knowlton)
Constitution won the 2014 Florida Derby and added another Grade 1 score at Gulfstream Park the following year in the Donn Handicap. The breakout young sire is expected to have three representatives from his first crop in this Saturday’s Florida Derby in Grade 1 winner Tiz the Law, Grade 3 winner Independence Hall, and Grade 1-placed Gouverneur Morris. The three colts bring a combined career mark of 11-8-2-1 into the race.
Tiz the Law won the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes last fall to highlight the season for Constitution, who finished a close second on the freshman earnings list to Triple Crown winner American Pharoah. Constitution tied for the lead among freshman sires by individual winners and led the way by graded stakes winners, with Grade 3 winners Amalfi Sunrise and By Your Side also on his résumé. His runners have trained on well as 3-year-olds, with Tiz the Law winning the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes, Independence Hall winning the Jerome Stakes and finishing second in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes, and Grade 3 winner Laura’s Light joining the party.
New York-bred Tiz the Law is out of the Tiznow mare Tizfiz, a multiple stakes winner who won the Grade 2 San Gorgonio at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Her foals include Awestruck, by Constitution’s sire, Tapit. Awestruck was stakes placed at up to 1 1/16 miles.
Tizfiz is a full sister to Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Fury Kapcori, as well as a half-sister to stakes winner Dixie Commander. This is the extended family of 1997 Horse of the Year Favorite Trick and, more recently, of multiple Grade 1 winner Moonshine Memories.
