Renegade Into Mischief – Spice Is Nice, by Curlin Bred in Kentucky by Robert and Lawana Low ($975,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase by West Bloodstock, agent for Repole Stable)   Renegade’s performance in the Arkansas Derby made him the early Kentucky Derby favorite. He has a pedigree befitting a Derby favorite, as he is by one of the leading sires in the race’s history and from a strong female family with plenty of two-turn success. Into Mischief has been North America’s leading sire for seven consecutive years – the first time in more than a half-century that a sire has put together a streak that long. He has sired a record-tying three Kentucky Derby winners. He is the sire of 2020 Horse of the Year Authentic, winner of the pandemic-delayed 2020 Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic; of 2021 official Derby winner Mandaloun; and last year’s Horse of the Year Sovereignty, who won the Derby, Belmont, and Travers. Into Mischief is expected to have three chances to break the Derby sire record this year, with Renegade, Commandment, and Potente pointing to the race. :: DRF Kentucky Derby Package: Save on Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Betting Strategies, and more. Renegade is the first foal for Spice Is Nice, by stamina influence Curlin. She followed in that mold, with her biggest win coming in the Grade 3 Allaire duPont Distaff at 1 1/8 miles at Pimlico. Spice Is Nice is out of Dame Dorothy, whose most important win came in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at seven furlongs. She also was a multiple stakes winner at 1 1/16 miles, including the Grade 3 Turnback the Alarm, and finished second in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita at 1 1/8 miles. Dame Dorothy showed unusual speed from a stamina-oriented family. She is a half-sister to Mrs. Lindsay, winner of the Group 1 Prix Vermeille Lucien Barriere at 1 1/2 miles in France. She shipped to Woodbine to win the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at 1 1/4 miles. While those victories came on turf, the Churchill Downs dirt track often plays well to pedigrees with some turf in them, particularly when it is wet. That hint of turf ability, plus potential wet-track ability from both Into Mischief and Curlin, are added bonuses in Renegade’s strong pedigree. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
