:: DRF BREEDING LIVE: Real-time coverage of breeding and sales

A sire with a classic background meets the dam of a champion sprinter with Hot Rod Charlie, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up who goes in Saturday’s Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.

Oxbow won the 2013 Preakness Stakes and finished second in the Belmont Stakes. He is one of two classic winners by the late Awesome Again, also the sire of 2019 Belmont winner Sir Winston. Awesome Again, the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, is regarded as a source of stamina. As one example, Awesome Again also sired 2004 BC Classic winner Ghostzapper. Additionally, Oxbow is out of a full sister to two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Tiznow, a classic sire in his own right.

As a stallion, Oxbow is the sire of seven stakes winners from his first four crops of racing age. Those are led by 2018 Gulfstream Park Oaks winner Coach Rocks.

Indian Miss is the dam of five winners from as many starters, led by 2019 Eclipse Award champion male sprinter Mitole. He won seven stakes going six or seven furlongs, and also won the Metropolitan Handicap at a mile in his championship season. Mitole and Hot Rod Charlie, who won his maiden at a mile, are the only winners beyond seven furlongs for Indian Miss.

Indian Miss is out of Glacken’s Gal, a stakes winner sprinting as a juvenile. That mare is the dam of Live Lively, winner of the Davona Dale at 1 1/16 miles before finishing second in the Gulfstream Oaks.
